What is Occupational Therapy??

We are in our last year of Occupational Therapy school. On numerous occasions we have been asked to describe what exactly we have been learning about for the last three years. "What's the difference between OT's and PT's?!" "Do you help people find jobs?!" "What else do OT's do besides handwriting?!" These are often the questions that we are faced with. All this has made us recognize the need to expand the knowledge of our future profession to "outsiders." We have decided that a blog would be an excellent way to provide this information to others. Additionally we hope that other Occupational Therapy students and Occupational therapists will read our blog to discuss various fieldwork placements that they have been at, to comment on the experiences they have had, providing essential tools that students may need to have a successful experience and lastly to offer treatment interventions that they have utilized and have proven to be beneficial.
Each week we will ask a new question, offer our own insights and we hope that others will follow and provide their own perspective on the proposed topic.

  6. As a speech therapist working in a big school, I collaborate with OT's regarding common students. Additionally, I refer students to be evaluated for OT... I'm hoping to gain insight from the blog for other 'issues' that OT deals with that I can look out for. It will also be interesting to read how OT's provide treatment and intervention. Looking forward to reading more!!

  9. Wow I think this is a great idea! I work in a nursing home and I am in touch with some of the occupational therapists. When I come into the therapy room I often watch the OT actvities taking place. The residents love going to therapy and I often wonder what are they doing there? How does placing pegs in a board or rolling putty help these residents get better.I think this blog will help me learn more about OT and help me deal better with residents in the home. I think its important to have a social network like this.My goals are to help my residents acheive to the best of their ability giving them a sense of pride.

  12. I love OT and all it has to offer. A few of my relatives have received services and they keep referring to it as Physical Therapy (or physiotherapy) and I would like to explain to them that it is a great field in and of itself. I have a hard time explaining in detail what the differences are and what makes OT unique because even I (and I know that it is a different profession) see a lot of overlap. I look forward to following this blog in the hopes to gain a better understanding of what OT is. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

  14. I have two children going for Occupational Therapy, and from what I see so far I believe it is an excellent career. Additionally, I am very impressed seeing the work of the OTs in the rehabilitation center where my mother was over the summer. They are very devoted to their patients. I am looking forward to reading your blog to let me know more about the OT profession so I will not have to keep on asking my daughters all about it. Great idea. great profession choice

  15. Looking forward to reading this blog and understanding the diverse roles of an OT. As a nursing student, I often send my patients to Rehab; therefore, it is imperative to understand how OTs help patients reach their potential and function at their fullest capacity so that I could reinforce these skills as part of my daily practice. Can't wait to learn a lot!!
